DAY 1 : Arrive Mt Hagen from Port Moresby – Mt Wilhelm
Upon arriving by plane into Mt. Hagen, embark on a scenic land transfer journey along a three-hour gravel road. This route takes you through the charming town of Kundiawa and continues towards Gembolge. Along the way, enjoy the picturesque views of vegetable gardens on steep hills, friendly locals, and clusters of village huts. Reaching the foot of Mt. Wilhelm, settle in for the night at your lodge. After a long day of traveling on a mix of sealed and gravel roads, an early rest is well-deserved. Enjoy dinner and overnight at Mt. Wilhelm.
After breakfast, the trek begins. Start by unpacking any non-essential items and packing only the essentials for the journey to Base Camp. Rest assured, all your belongings will be safely locked away until your return from Mt. Wilhelm. This walk is leisurely, allowing time to acclimatize to the environment. Enjoy the scenic beauty as you trek through a dense jungle canopy. Eventually, the path opens up, leading to two picturesque lakes where Base Camp is situated. Spend the afternoon and night at Base Camp, soaking in the stunning surroundings. After dinner, it’s important to get an early night’s rest, as the trek will start early the next morning. Accommodation is camping style at the Base Camp hut. Meals include breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
BASE CAMP – MT WILHELM PEAK – KEGSUGULE The day begins early with a light breakfast at 1:00 AM. After gathering and packing up all camping gear, the climb starts no later than 2:00 AM. The early start is crucial to reach the summit in time for sunrise or shortly after. As the ascent progresses, there will be opportunities to take breaks and maintain a steady pace, aiding in acclimatization. Reaching the summit is a remarkable experience, offering panoramic views of the coastal regions of Madang, and the Eastern and Western Highlands provinces of PNG. Take in the sense of accomplishment, capture plenty of photos, and enjoy the spectacular scenery from the summit of Mt. Wilhelm. As the sun rises and the summit begins to warm up, it’s time to start the descent back to Kegsugule. A short stop at Base Camp allows for a hot drink and a bite to eat before continuing the journey to the lodge. This day is physically and mentally demanding and should not be underestimated. Accommodation includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
After an early breakfast, depart from Mt. Wilhelm and embark on the scenic journey back to Mt. Hagen. Enjoy the beautiful landscapes one last time as you retrace your route. Upon arrival in Mt. Hagen, catch your return flight to Port Moresby, filled with wonderful memories of your adventure.
