Standing at 4,368 meters, Mt. Giluwe is the second highest peak in Papua New Guinea, following Mt. Wilhelm at 4,509 meters. Both peaks are accessible year-round, offering unique experiences in every season. Our trek includes an ascent of Mt. Hagen, which reaches 3,800 meters above sea level. 


This segment is highly recommended for acclimatization and offers additional exposure to the stunning surroundings, although trekkers can choose to bypass it if they wish.

Day 1 : ARRIVAL IN MT HAGEN

Upon arrival, meet and greet before transferring to a hotel in town for lunch.

After lunch, board the vehicle for a ride around town to shop for supplies in preparation for the hike to Mt. Giluwe.

Finish of the day by dinner and overnight at your lodge.

After breakfast, the trekking adventure begins. The journey starts with a walk through grasslands, gradually transitioning into the rainforest. The ascent continues, reaching an elevation of about 2400 meters and climbing further to the 3800-meter peak.

The surroundings at the peak are breathtaking, with pristine grasslands and panoramic views overlooking Mt. Hagen and the Nebliyer valleys. Spend time exploring the stunning dynamics at the peak before beginning the descent.

  • Mt. Hagen climb is for exposure and acclimatization purposes.
Mt. Giluwe, one of the seven volcanic summits, awaits in the central Highlands of PNG. The journey begins early, right after breakfast at around 4:30 am. Board a 4-wheel drive to Kagoba, an old agricultural research station, with a travel time of approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes. Upon arrival, meet the local porters and guides. After introductions and formalities, the trek begins, taking you through grassland trails and eventually into the rainforest, leading to the base camp. The trek takes approximately 6 to 7 hours. The porters will go ahead to set up camp and prepare dinner. As the temperature drops to around 9 to 10 degrees Celsius, extra warm clothing, a sleeping bag, and an open log fire will keep you warm and comfortable until dawn for the next leg of the journey.

After an early breakfast, the trek to the summit begins at pre-dawn. This part of the journey is both adventurous and challenging, requiring focus and determination.

Upon reaching the summit, take in the tranquility of the natural surroundings, with stunning views of the peak and valleys. Spend some time exploring the features around the summit before starting the descent.

Descend at a comfortable pace and return to camp for lunch. Afterward, continue walking back to Kagoba, where the vehicle will be waiting to take you back to the lodge.

Enjoy dinner and spend the night at the lodge.

After breakfast, board the vehicle for a scenic drive down to Mt. Hagen. Upon arrival, check in and catch your flight back to Port Moresby, reflecting on the incredible experiences and memories made during the trek. Safe journey onwards!
